Spotify tests Stories for playlists

Short videos of artists are available on the Christmas Hits playlist, among others. These are strongly reminiscent of well-known story functions of various social networks.

Spotify is testing a new Snapchat Stories-style feature alongside some playlists. On the Christmas Hits playlist, for example, a number of artists including Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Clarkson, and Pentatonix are using the short videos to share personal stories about the holiday season and their songwriting process.

The videos are accessible via an icon at the top left of each supported playlist (see screenshot). Clicking on this icon, brings up a user interface that should be familiar to everyone. It’s very reminiscent of Instagram or Snapchat Stories.

Spotify confirmed the new feature in a statement to Engadget. It is currently still a test. “At Spotify, we routinely run a number of tests to improve our user experience,” a spokesperson said. “Some of these tests eventually pave the way for broader user experiences, and others serve only as an important learning objective. At this time, we have no further news to report on future plans.”

Since the Stories success story on Snapchat, Stories have been gradually rolled out across numerous, if not all, popular social networks. Instagram’s implementation of the format is one of the most well-known, but other services such as YouTube, Twitter, WhatsApp and even LinkedIn have also implemented the feature.
