TikTok Beats Facebook in Usage Time per Month

TikTok surpasses Facebook in the number of hours spent per user per month.

TikTok more usage time than Facebook per month

For the first time, users are spending more time on TikTok than on Facebook, according to a new report on app usage. App Annie reports that time spent on TikTok has increased 325% year-over-year, meaning that the video platform now surpasses Facebook in terms of hours spent per user per month.

Average time spent has increased for nearly every app in every market, but few have increased as much as TikTok. The video platform ranks in the top 5 by time spent, and its growth rate over the past year surpasses nearly every other app analyzed in the report.

TikTok rises among the Social Media Elite

It ranks No. 1 on the list of top breakout apps in 2020, which ranks apps by growth in monthly active users over the past year. TikTok is on track to reach 1.2 billion active users in 2021.

That mark has only been reached by Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and China’s WeChat. It is no small feat that TikTok will secure a place among these apps this year.

TikTok is in a league of its own when it comes to revenue, ranking second among non-gaming apps in terms of consumer spending. While many social media apps monetize through advertising, the video platform monetizes through ads and the ability for users to purchase digital goods.

Mobile social media grows 3 years in 12 months

Mobile penetration is expected to have grown 2-3 years in the last 12 months. Mobile app downloads hit a new high of 218 billion in 2020, up 7% year-over-year. Americans spent 8% more time on their mobile device than in front of the TV in 2020 – 4 hours per day on mobile compared to 3.7 hours of TV.

Mobile ad placements grew 95% year-over-year in the US. Video ads saw tremendous growth last year but were outpaced by the growth of interstitial ads. App Annie’s report shows growth across all app categories including gaming, shopping, food delivery, and subscription streaming services. But in addition to entertainment and commerce apps, business app growth jumped in 2020.
