WordPress is the most popular CMS in the world

Nearly 40% of all websites worldwide will be powered by WordPress in 2021.

WordPress is the most popular CMS of the world

The content management system (CMS) WordPress is now used by 39.5% of all websites on the web. In 2020, it was still 35% of all websites. Counting only websites that use a content management system, WordPress has a market share of 64%. Whereas a significant number of websites (38.3%) do not use a content management system at all.

WordPress is the most popular CMS by a wide margin, while Shopify is a distant second. Although Shopify is designed for e-commerce, it is not the most popular e-commerce CMS on the market. That title also goes to the CMS.

WordPress is the website all-rounder

In the past, WordPress was still thought to be a blogging-only platform. But due to the numerous plugins and themes, there are basically no limits with the CMS. With the CMS, website can be transformed into almost anything they want.

For example, the WooCommerce plugin is used by 4.9% of all websites, which turns the website into a web store. Since WooCommerce is exclusively available for WordPress websites, this makes WordPress the most popular CMS for e-commerce. Not Shopify.

Is WordPress the best CMS?

The answer to this question depends on your experience. A first-time website owner with limited resources and knowledge may prefer a CMS like Wix or Squarespace due to its beginner-friendly nature. In turn, the lack of features on these systems may cause more advanced users to look elsewhere.

Someone who has more experience with web development will certainly appreciate WordPress’ customization capabilities. It’s hard to argue that the CMS doesn’t meet the needs of most website owners.

Not to mention that WordPress excels in areas like usability, mobile usability, security, speed, and SEO. In other words: WordPress is the best CMS for most people, which is why it holds well over half of the market share of all content management systems.
