YouTube Shorts – Google’s answer to TikTok?

YouTube launches Shorts. A new feature that looks a lot like TikTok.

Google’s push into short-form video content begins with YouTube Shorts, a new feature being tested in limited markets. Shorts is a new short-form video experience for creators and artists who want to make short, memorable videos using nothing but their cell phones.

YouTube Shorts offers several features to video creators

  • Create and upload videos of 15 seconds or less.
  • Editing videos with a range of creative tools.
  • Stitching together shorter clips with a multi-segment camera.
  • Add music to videos from the YouTube library.
  • Speed up or slow down videos.
  • Timers and countdowns.
  • Users can start recording a short using the new create icon, which has been prominently placed in the YouTube app for Android (coming soon to iOS).

Once a short is published, it will appear in a carousel on the YouTube homepage specifically designed for the new format.

Users can jump from one video to another by swiping vertically while viewing content from the carousel. The carousel hosts all short videos on YouTube, not just those created with shorts. For this reason, YouTube encourages creators to start preparing now by uploading all existing short videos.

Is YouTube Shorts another TikTok clone?

YouTube Shorts draws obvious comparisons to the leading short-form video app, TikTok. It’s hard to deny the similarities. And it’s worth noting that YouTube made the decision to launch this feature in a country where TikTok is banned.

Now that the leading competitor in short-form video is out of the way, there’s a whole audience clamoring for an alternative. In the process, Facebook and Google will have to go toe-to-toe. So it will be exciting to see who wins the battle for Generation Z.
